Windproof and resistant with high wearing comfort at the same time - softshell jackets with or without hood are very popular garments. They have long been established as sports and leisure wear, and thanks to their functional properties they are also being used more and more often at work.
The weather-resistant softshell jackets are available as cardigans or hooded jackets. Some models have a drawstring waistband or cuffs that can be adjusted with Velcro. The practical functional jackets can be a useful addition to your work clothes, so that you feel comfortable in any climate. A small pack size of the softshell jacket helps you to react to changing weather conditions. If you don't need rain or wind protection, you can stow the jacket in your work bag to save space.
In the GenXtreme range you will find a wide selection of breathable and functional softshell jackets from selected top brands at great prices.
What is so special about softshell jackets for work?
Softshell as outerwear is a practical and reliable companion during work. The materials are windproof and several laminated membrane layers or a coating guarantee optimum weather protection. Stretch materials such as spandex simultaneously ensure freedom of movement and thus a pleasant wearing comfort. High-quality models feature an ergonomic cut and allow freedom of movement. Work jackets made of softshell combine the most important properties of functional clothing: they are at least water-repellent, windproof, breathable, provide an insulating layer of air between body and clothing and at the same time allow air exchange, so you do not sweat.
The inner layer is made of fine velour or fleece to retain heat inside the jacket. Moisture is transported away from the skin. The membrane in the middle layer is water vapor permeable and provides air exchange. The outer layer is usually made of a durable and robust material to insulate the lining and wick moisture to the outside.
If you want to protect yourself with your softshell jacket not only from wind, but also from rain and moisture, you must take into account the specified water column (see below) when buying. When choosing the size of your new softshell jacket for work, you should make sure that you can dress under the jacket according to the onion principle, so that you can react to changing weather conditions. Freedom of movement is particularly important for a high wearing comfort, so it may make sense to buy the jacket one size larger.
Water column, breathability and impregnation - quality of softshell jackets
More weather-resistant than fleece, more flexible than a conventional rain jacket - work jackets made of softshell combine the most important properties of the middle and outer clothing layer of functional jackets. A hood protects your head and face. Windstopper® garments are particularly dense and offer maximum wind protection. Some models are already impregnated by the manufacturer, for others you can apply an impregnation yourself. Good to know: If you wash your softshell jacket frequently, the impregnation must be renewed sooner or more often.
In addition to breathability and wind protection, the water column is of great importance for functional jackets. It indicates the water resistance of a fabric or material. The higher the value in millimeters, the more waterproof the jacket. Values below 800 millimeters indicate that the soft shell jacket is water-repellent.
However, whether a garment is truly waterproof depends not only on the water column, but also on the workmanship. Water can enter through a low-quality zipper or a poorly finished seam. Seams should be protected from the inside with tapes, zippers from the outside.
Softshell jacket care
Softshell is easy to care for, but you should note that frequent washing leads to the fact that the protection of the impregnation wears off and you have to renew it so that the jacket continues to protect you from rain and moisture. You can easily remove light dirt with a brush or a wet towel. Basically, you can wash softshell jackets in the washing machine, always follow the sewn-in care instructions. Close all zippers before washing and turn the garment inside out. Fabric softener can damage the membrane, washing powder clogs the pores. After washing, you can simply let the softshell jacket air dry. You should not use the spin cycle to protect the zippers and the impregnation.
